Animal Adventures - Floe Lake Wolf

The Floe Lake Wolf was created in early 2025 for the 5th edition set. I knew I wanted to create a piece for Kootenay National Park as I felt it was lacking representation in our animals. I knew I wanted to do Floe Lake but during my visit to Floe Lake, we didn't really encounter any animals. Then I remembered John E. Marriott's book, The Kootenay Wolves: Five Years Following a Wild Wolf Pack. Then I knew which animal I needed to do.

Floe Lake has always been on my list to explore ever since early 2011. I had seen pictures and heard stories from friends and knew I needed to see it with my own eyes. I had heard its a fairly easy hike with a big hill at the end.

As life went on and schedules got busy, Floe Lake kept getting pushed off to maybe next year.

Fast forward to the pandemic. The Canadian border was closed and many people were not able to come for their hiking trips and many people in other provinces weren't able to come to the Rockies for their hiking trips and a couple friends of mine snagged a few nights at the Floe Lake Campground in September 2020.

The month of September is our fall season for Larch Trees and Floe Lake has lots of larch trees. So I was extremely excited to be able to see this location I've always wanted to visit during one of my favourite seasons ever!

The reviews were correct, the hike was fairly easy except that final big hill. It took me hours just to climb that hill and I felt like giving up at many points but my friends and my pup Tuzo kept me going.

I am looking forward to returning again one day soon and finally making it up to the pass to among the larches overlooking the lake with Floe Peak in the background.

Inside this piece, I designed it with Floe Peak and some Larch-esque trees within.
